BUT WHAT’S A SWEDE?

Indie film festivals have a rich history of showcasing amazing undiscovered talent, where Hollywood insiders troll for the next big thing, where A-list stars promote the small, labor-of-love projects they do between blockbusters. This is not the case with the annual swede fest™ palm beach. Instead, a “swede” is a 3-minute no-budget, laughably bad remake of a hit Hollywood film. The term comes from the 2008 comedy, “Be Kind Rewind,” which started an underground sweding craze and resulted in the very first swede fest™ in Fresno. Next came swede fest™ tampa bay, and swede fest™ palm beach ushers in its 6th year on March 24, 2018 from 7 pm to 9 pm at the Kelsey Theater in Lake Park.

“sweders” will walk the “where the heck is the red carpet?” dressed in their best ‘Hollywood’ garb (whatever that means to them) before heading into the theater. The hit improv group Cheese & Crackers will emcee the night with quick breaks between groups of films to allow audience members to decide the best of the worst films. Following the “awards ceremony” everyone is invited next door to the Brewhouse Gallery for the after party.

Cult Film Festival Returns with swede fest™ palm beach 6 (the sixiest!)

swede fest 6Palm Beach Film Society seeks hilariously bad remakes of Hollywood hits for March 24 festival at Kelsey Theater

LAKE PARK, Fla. (December 28, 2017) Calling all movie fans! It’s back! The #1 film festival that refuses to take itself seriously returns with swede fest™ palm beach 6, the “sixiest” swede fest to date! Once again honoring bad remakes of Hollywood hits, the underground festival takes place at the Kelsey Theater in Lake Park, with an entertainment-packed after party next door at the Brewhouse Gallery. The wildly popular, sell-out event showcases laughably bad, 3 minute remakes of Hollywood hits made by amateur filmmakers throughout Palm Beach County.  This year’s showcase of ‘bad films made by good people’ is presented by the Palm Beach Film Society on March 24, 2018 from 7 pm to 9 pm at 700 Park Avenue, Lake Park.

But what is a “swede?” Based on the movie, “Be Kind, Rewind,” a “swede” is a no-budget, hilarious remake of a Hollywood film which spawned an underground sweding craze and resulted in the first swede fest™ in Fresno, Calif. Next came swede fest™ tampa bay, then swede fest™ palm beach in 2012. Picture “Twister” filmed using balled up paper towels; “The Fast and the Furious” reenacted using children’s Big Wheels – these are only a few examples of the hundreds of films submitted the past four years. Perfect “short attention span theater,” each film is maxed out at 3 minutes, meaning that as “so-bad-it’s-good” as the film may be, another one is soon to appear.

The audience votes on the best/worst film made, which could win bragging rights for the future (or not) filmmaker, and a special grand prize. Additional award prizes will also be given for overall epic-ness. It is completely free to enter a swede, and selected films will receive a complimentary ticket for the director. The evening event will once again be emceed by the hilarious improv group Cheese & Crackers. Even if you don’t have a film submitted, seeing the filmmakers dressed in their versions of “Hollywood bizarre” is worth the admission price, which is a mere $12 per person in advance, or $15 at the door.

All films must be rated PG-13. Also, there is only one swede per film title, so no one will be stuck watching three remakes of “The Last Jedi” (What happened, Luke???). Those looking to enter can email their chosen title to info@swedefestpalmbeach.com. Films must be completed and sent by March 1. Updates on film titles are posted to the swede fest™ palm beach Facebook page, and rules and details are located at www.swedefestpalmbeach.com.

Tickets may be purchased at www.kelseytheater.com. The event is completely volunteer run, and individuals and businesses looking to become a sponsor can email info@swedefestpalmbeach.com or call Elizabeth Dashiell during working hours at 561-543-8276 to learn about the many ways they can gain shameless amounts of exposure to hundreds of all-ages residents.Swede fest™ palm beach 6 is currently sponsored by the Palm Beach Film Society and Alchemy Communications in cultural partnership with the Palm Beach County Film and Television Commission.
